Gila National Forest and Wilderness
Southwest New Mexico

For: men, women, healers, artists, writers, herbalists, philosophers, ecologists

Julie McIntyreThe Earth Medicine Apprenticeship will meet for three - five day intensives over the course of three months from May to August. The location is Southwest New Mexico where high desert meets Chihuahua desert meets mountains, hot springs and national forest at the gateway to the Gila National Forest and Wilderness, Silver City, New Mexico.

This will be a practical, experiential immersion in:

  • Earth Medicine
  • Medicine Making
  • Deep Ecology of the Self
  • Depth Diagnosis
  • Sacred Plant Medicine
  • The heart as an organ of perception
  • Intuitive development
  • Natural philosophy
  • Herbal first aid
  • The nature of relationships
  • and more...

We will work with, and from within, wild ecosystems and the reality plants, trees, wildness, stones, animals and elements live in.

The Work you do is transferrable meaning; it has applications to every aspect of your life if you choose to work with it at ever deepening levels.

Learning to hold context for yourself, your healing and integrity with a commitment to deep, potentially life altering changes is in large part, a focus of the work. A commitment to showing up for the classes, for you, for the group, and doing the homework assignments is crucial. Therefore, missing an intensive or any part of an intensive is not an option except in very narrowly defined emergencies.

It is not where you begin so much as how you
take the next step
and the next
and the next.
Where you end
must come from how you live
in the space between
beginning and ending.

The nature of the work is deeply intimate. It will challenge what you believe to be real, what you think are the limitations of yourself and of Gaia.

We work intimately with plants and wild ecosystems and ceremony to facilitate the goals and the work of the apprenticeship. Working with plants and wild ecosystems invaginates us to deeper parts of the ocean of Being, of myth and the invisibles that inherently inhabit our life experience.

I get asked this question often. The question to ask is, “Is this for you?”  Most important is to feel on some level that this work is for you at this time in your life. You may feel "called" to this work or have a "need" to participate. In truth it is a feeling response. You may hear a voice saying ‘I must do this thing” and it too will have a feeling to it.  There will already be invisibles at work in your decision, much as William Stafford talks about:

earth medicineThe Way It Is

There’s a thread you follow. It goes among
things that change. But it doesn’t change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread.
But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can’t get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt
or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding.
You don’t ever let go of the thread.

When you set out on an adventure, it’s not just your adventure alone, you know.

Must I be an Herbalist?

Many people attracted to the apprenticeship ask this question. You don’t have to be an herbalist or even plan to be an herbalist. I must tell you however…those green plants, they have a way of insinuating themselves into your awareness and life.
And practically speaking…the knowledge you will have at the end of our time together is increasingly valuable as technological medicines and old systems of healing and interacting with the world fail.

The fee includes: teaching, some materials (you’ll need to purchase 3-4 books), 4 nights lodging/camping, good food for four and a half days. Lodging is double occupancy (two twin beds) on a first come basis. There is no fee discount for camping. Enrollment is limited.
